What is Boys State?

American Legion Boys State is a premier leadership and citizenship program designed to provide high school juniors with an immersive experience in the democratic process. Hosted annually, this week-long program offers young men the opportunity to learn about the structure and function of government by creating and running their own simulated state.

Why Participate?

  • Engage in Hands-On Learning: Experience the inner workings of government by assuming roles in various branches and levels of government. From city council to governor, participants engage in hands-on activities that mirror real-life political processes.
     

  • Develop Leadership Skills: Develop critical leadership skills through practical experience, teamwork, and public speaking. Boys State encourages participants to take initiative, solve problems, and make informed decisions.
     

  • Network with Peers: Form lasting friendships with fellow delegates from across the state. The shared experience of Boys State creates a network of peers who are passionate about leadership and service.
     

  • Civic Engagement: Gain a deeper understanding of civic responsibilities and the importance of active participation in the democratic process. Boys State instills a sense of duty and the value of contributing to your community and country.

Program Highlights:

  • Government Simulation: Participate in mock elections, legislative sessions, and judicial proceedings.
     

  • Guest Speakers: Learn from experienced professionals, including elected officials, military personnel, and community leaders.
     

  • Workshops and Seminars: Engage in interactive sessions covering topics such as leadership, ethics, and public service.
     

  • Community Service: Take part in activities that promote civic responsibility and community involvement.

How to Apply

Eligible high school juniors interested in participating in Boys State should contact their local American Legion Post for more information on the application process and sponsorship opportunities. Selection is based on academic performance, leadership potential, and a commitment to community service.
